Are Public Domain Songs Used More In Film?

by Tamera H. BennettPosted October 23, 2008

Thanks again to the Copyright Law Twitter for the heads up on this article.

Professor Heald, (visiting professor at the University of Chicago Law School) presented a paper this week that looked at a group of the most valuable musical compositions made between 1913 and 1932, and the frequency with which those compositions appeared in films released after 1968.

The blog post gives a good summary of his study of how often PD songs from this time frame (1913-1922) are used and how often non-PD songs (1923 to 1933) are used in film.

I would love to get a copy of his full paper. Let me know if you have connections.
